Mama profiles three modern brands that are working for our periods

Recently, all sorts of innovative initiatives have sprung up around the world, attempting to break down taboos surrounding menstruation. And out of these discussions, a host of great services have been born, aiming to make our monthlies easier. Here are just three brands Mama loves…

Freda

Biodegradable, hypoallergenic and chemical-free, the pads and tampons offered by the new online subscription service, Freda, should be on your must-have list. The company behind this organic, cotton, eco-friendly period care range, which launched in January, uses artificial intelligence and insight from gynaecologists, allowing you to select products based on your own cycle, then sync their delivery date. “We want to embrace how we experience periods and start recognising them as a sign of a healthy woman,” says founder Affi Parvizi-Wayne. “I was struck by the lack of available information around what actually goes into pads and tampons. Just as we pay attention to what goes into the foods we eat and the products we put on our skin, we should also be able to make a more informed decision when it comes to the most intimate product we, as women, use.” A portion of every subscription to Freda also goes towards initiatives such as A Bloody Good Cause and Bloody Good Period, which aim to offer period care to refugees, asylum seekers and the homeless.

FLO Living

The brainchild of Alisa Vitti, a functional nutritionist and women’s hormone expert, FLO Living is a virtual destination offering hormone support for menstruating women. After being diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Vitti recovered her hormonal health through a food protocol that has now also helped thousands of women in more than 216 countries through the signature online programme, the WomanCode System, according to the website. Whether your flow is light or heavy, you’re suffering from low libido, or can’t handle PMS, FLO Living has a wealth of information, products and consultations that promise to help you recognise your symptoms – and be happier and healthier.

Pink Parcel

Some may think a box packed full of goodies delivered to your door before your period may be overindulgent. Our busy mums at Mama, however, think Pink Parcel is a nifty service that’ll see an end to last-minute supermarket runs when we’re caught short. Dominic Hill created It’s a Monthly Thing in 2014. It started with him, his wife and their daughter packing the first-ever Pink Parcel at home, and it has since grown to include an online platform and e-shop. The parcel is full of essential (and non-essential) products, including your choice of femcare, herbal tea, chocolate, and skincare items.
Don’t mind if we do.
