Interviews

Chatting motherhood with Eva Rayner…

There is something especially beautiful about a business born from motherhood — where creativity, family and the desire to make something meaningful become intertwined.

For Eva, founder, designer and creative force behind Vivessence by Luna, that story begins with her daughter, Luna. Inspired by a lifelong love of fashion, exquisite craftsmanship and the beauty found in everyday details, Eva has created a world that feels romantic, individual and deeply personal.

We caught up with Eva at her countryside home to talk about the influence of motherhood on her work, her love of vintage lace and natural fabrics, finding inspiration in the beautifully ordinary, and why the moments shared with the people we love will always matter most.

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself and your family?

My name is Eva, and I am the founder, designer, stylist and creative behind Vivessence by Luna.

I live in the countryside with my husband, our daughter Luna, who is eight years old, and our beloved dog Bear. Family is at the centre of everything I do and, in many ways, it is also at the heart of my work.

Fashion has always been part of my life. I grew up surrounded by it through my mother’s clothing boutique and spent countless hours fascinated by beautiful garments, accessories, textures, and personal style. Individuality and self-expression were encouraged from a young age, and today I feel incredibly fortunate to have built a career that allows me to share that passion every day.

Art and self-expression also run strongly through my family. My husband comes from a deeply artistic family with many well-known artists, and I often think Luna has inherited that artistic spirit from both sides.

Watching her grow into her own person, with such a strong sense of style and confidence in who she is, continues to inspire me every day, both personally and professionally.

What inspired you to start Vivessence by Luna?

The inspiration was, quite simply, Luna.

Although I had been designing long before becoming a mother, her arrival changed something in me. It made me think more deeply about femininity, beauty, legacy, and the things we pass from one generation to the next.

When Luna was born, I felt a strong desire to create something meaningful and lasting. Vivessence by Luna became an extension of that feeling — a brand rooted in craftsmanship, individuality, and timeless design.

Even today, Luna remains my greatest inspiration. I love watching her express herself through her own unique sense of style. She knows exactly what she likes, and there is something incredibly refreshing about that confidence and authenticity.

How did becoming a mother play into the decision and how does it influence your designs?

Motherhood gave me an entirely new perspective on life and on the way I create.

It taught me to slow down and notice the beauty in everyday moments. It deepened my appreciation for emotion, connection, storytelling, and the memories we create throughout our lives.

Those values naturally found their way into my designs. Every collection begins with a feeling rather than a trend. I want each piece to evoke emotion and become part of someone’s story.

Becoming a mother also strengthened my appreciation for timelessness. I have always been drawn to beautiful craftsmanship, but motherhood made me think more about creating pieces that can be treasured, remembered, and perhaps even passed down through generations.

We love your beautiful, whimsical designs! Where do you draw inspiration from?

Inspiration comes from everywhere.

I am constantly inspired by vintage textiles, antique lace, nature, interiors, architecture, old fashion editorials, and beautiful craftsmanship.

I have been collecting vintage lace for over twenty years, and it continues to be one of my greatest sources of inspiration. Some people collect paintings; I collect vintage lace. I am endlessly fascinated by its history, craftsmanship, and individuality. Lace has become a signature of my work because it adds both softness and character while carrying a story of its own.

I am also inspired by emotion. Sometimes it is a memory, a room, a colour, a piece of music, or even a particular quality of light that sparks an idea.

Most recently, interiors have played an even larger role in my creative process. We recently moved from our beautiful Georgian home after sixteen years, and that experience has made me even more aware of atmosphere, detail, and the stories spaces can tell.

Why was it important to you to use natural fabrics and handmade production?

For me, quality and craftsmanship have always been far more important than quantity.

Natural fabrics possess a beauty and character that simply cannot be replicated. They age beautifully, feel wonderful against the skin, and create a very different relationship between the garment and the person wearing it.

The same philosophy applies to handmade production. There is something incredibly special about knowing that a piece has been created with time, care, skill, and intention.

In a world that moves increasingly fast, I wanted Vivessence by Luna to celebrate slower, more thoughtful craftsmanship and create garments that feel truly special.

We love the glimpses of your motherhood journey on your feed. What are your favourite things about being a mum?

Without question, watching Luna grow into her own person.

I love seeing her discover new interests, develop her own opinions, and express herself creatively. She surprises me every day with her confidence, imagination, and strong sense of self.

One of the most special things to witness is the incredible bond she shares with her grandmother. In a world where life often feels busy and fast-paced, watching them together is a beautiful reminder to slow down and appreciate the people we love most.

Their relationship inspires me in so many ways, not only personally but professionally. It reminds me that the most meaningful things in life are often the simplest: time, connection, and being present. I know those are memories Luna will carry with her forever, and I will cherish them too.

What are the most rewarding and the most difficult aspects of being ‘online’ in this space?

The most rewarding part is undoubtedly the community.

Through social media, I have connected with incredible women, mothers, creatives, entrepreneurs, and clients from all over the world. It has allowed me to share the story behind my brand and create genuine relationships that I never would have had the opportunity to build otherwise.

Interestingly, social media also became an important part of my styling journey. Although I had already been styling private clients and working with brands for many years, these platforms opened doors to some truly wonderful opportunities. Through social media, I have had the privilege of collaborating with incredible brands, photographers, artists, and fellow creatives. Many of those opportunities have played a significant role in the growth of my styling career and have led to lasting professional relationships and friendships.

The most challenging aspect is remembering that social media only ever shows a small part of reality. It can be easy to compare yourself to carefully curated moments. I try to stay grounded by focusing on authenticity and sharing what feels true to me rather than chasing trends or algorithms.

How do you manage running a business and being a busy mama?

I don’t believe in perfect balance.

Some days family comes first, while other days the business requires more attention. I think the key is learning to be flexible and giving yourself grace when things don’t go exactly to plan.

I am fortunate to have a very supportive husband and family, and that support makes all the difference.

At the end of the day, both motherhood and business are driven by love, commitment, passion, and resilience. They can be demanding, but they also complement one another beautifully.

And finally, could you describe a perfect family day for us?

A perfect family day would probably begin with a slow morning and end with a house full of people.

I absolutely love hosting. Cooking is one of my greatest passions outside of fashion, and there is nothing I enjoy more than gathering family and friends around a table. For me, food has always been about connection, creating memories, and making people feel at home.

So my ideal day would be a house full of laughter, children running around, Bear happily weaving between everyone’s feet, simple home-cooked food shared with the people I love most, and a chilled bottle of rosé waiting in the fridge.

The older I get, the more I realise that luxury is not necessarily found in grand gestures. It is found in togetherness, meaningful conversations, and those beautifully ordinary moments that become treasured memories.

For me, a perfect family day is simply being surrounded by the people I love.
