Ferne McCann on her new parenting podcast Keeping The Little Things Little…
Hi Ferne, it’s lovely to talk to you again. Could you tell us more about the new Mum & You podcast: ‘keeping the little things little’ that you’re hosting? What’s it all about?
This series is all about reminding mums that you’re not on your own. We’re all just trying our best and the perfect mum *just* doesn’t exist. We share our experiences and advice together. As a mum of two, I can relate to all our guests and I understand what they are going through. These are real important conversations. Although we might not have all the answers, we’ll be sharing our experiences and hearing from some well-known mums!
Who are some of the guests we should be listening out for?
Each guest was chosen for their knowledge in specific areas and also for having relatable stories. The whole point of this podcast is to keep things real, show other mums that no one has it all together, all the time. The Mum & You community fed back their biggest concerns, issues or dilemmas they face as a parent and the podcast tackles in to them with raw, refreshing honesty!
With such an amazing line-up, we’re sure it would be hard to choose a favourite guest… But is there an episode that really resonated with you as a mum?
I think this has to be the social media one. It’s definitely relevant to me right now and something I think about all the time with my two girls. The guests on this ep flag some amazing points. Social media is such a big part of our lives. It’s not going anywhere and everyone’s using it so it’s super important that we focus on the ways to make it safer for everyone!
We love that it tackles tricky parenting topics – such as should we share pictures of our kids online. I think a lot of parents feel torn about this. How are you feeling after taking a little bit of the spotlight off your family life by quitting your show ‘My Family and Me’?
I still feel it’s the right decision. I have chosen this life for myself, Sunday was born in to it and I instinctively felt it was the right time for me to take her out the spotlight. She’s loved filming the show, but I’m aware as she gets older she should be the one making these decisions about the direction of her life and I think that will be easier for her away from the cameras.

You’ve been such a big advocate for maternal mental health. What are some of the things that you wished mums had more confidence to share with each other and talk about?
The big things for me are the practical sides of post pregnancy…the bladder leaks!! It is amazing how much this impacts your mental health because it really knocks your confidence. I spoke about my bladder issues on my show and it provoked the biggest response ever. It was the first time a young mum in the public eye had spoken about it. I remember at first feeling really embarrassed to talk about it, then it occurred to me that this is real, this needs to be dealt with, I cant be the only woman suffering with this and I most definitely can’t be the only woman feeling like she can’t talk about it to anyone. So I decided to talk about it. The last thing a new mum needs to contend with is fearing a sneeze and peeing herself. Child birth does change our bodies and we need to be more aware of how it changes…I’m not just talking about boobs sagging, I mean the real issues that impact the day to day. The things that alter our confidence and make us feel less about ourselves. This is so important for women and we should be told to do kegels all through our pregnancy and after! My tip is do your them while you’re brushing your teeth make it a daily practice.
Last time we spoke, you talked about the poonami episode that your daughter Finty had on live TV, whilst sitting on Holly Willougby’s lap! We know that mum emergencies (like this!) are the inspiration behind Mum & You’s new ‘One Wipe’. Have you been using them at home with the girls and what do you love about them?
I can’t tell you how handy they are!! We’ve all done that arm juggling act of of changing a poo nappy while fumbling around for wipes. There’s only so much a momma can do ha. The one wipe is really big, it’s heavy duty and it’s biodegradable! You get a lot of use out of that one wipe, I can tell you!! They have saved me from many emergencies.
And finally, is there a nugget of mama advice that really stuck with you from recording the podcast?
Honesty, there’s not just one, there’s a ton. From avoiding sleep deprivation, handling fussy eaters, staying in your ‘own lane’, the importance of putting yourself first to implementing social media protection for your family. As any parent knows, dilemmas change depending on what stage your child is at and what I love about the podcast eps is how much it caters for the different stages and how practical the advice is!
