The most popular baby boy and girl names 2017

Take a look at the most popular baby names so far in 2017 – is your on the list?

Words Miriam Carey

Everyone agrees that finding the right name for your little one certainly requires a lot of thought. Some parents have already decided a shortlist of their favourite names before their baby is even a twinkle in an eye; other parents leave things a lot later, and wait to meet their new arrival.

It is funny how trends in baby names change from year to year. They are usually influenced by outside sources  such as celebrities, politics, favourite TV shows and novels. This year floral and vintage names remain in fashion, as do names ending in ‘a’ for girls.

As it turns out, Olivia is still the most popular first names in England and Wales for girls – in fact Olivia has taken the top spot for two years in a row. For boys, Muhammad is back at number 1 after a brief spell at number 2 last year, when Oliver nabbed top spot.

The reshuffling continued in the girl’s top twenty, but mostly between long-standing favourites. Both Sophia and Amelia rose up the list, Isabella and Isabelle swapped places, and Emily and Lily fell.

New entries and fast movers in the girl’s top 20 are Ivy, Emily, Phoebe and Grace. Emily, Phoebe and Ivy are new to the top 20; while Ivy has grown a massive 26 places, and Grace has risen 6.

Meanwhile the boy’s top twenty experienced similar dramatic changes. While Harry and Noah kept their spot in the top 5 merely swapping places, Jack dropped from the top 5 for the first time this millennium. While Freddie rose 9 places, Archie, Theo, and Logan are all new entries.
