If you’re a breastfeeding mama, you may well have encountered a few sartorially sticky situations. We had a friend who spent a large part of her brother’s wedding reception feeding her newborn in the ladies’ loos with her dress over her head. Need we say more. Postpartum, your body has probably changed after growing a baby, but your pregnancy wardrobe (and indeed pre-pregnancy wardrobe!) might not allow for easy access. You could just hang out in an oversized tee or sweatshirt, but what happens when you need to get dressed up? Luckily, there are some great brands who make comfortable and stylish breastfeeding friendly clothing. Think genius hidden zips, perfectly placed buttons, and wrap over fabrics.
Here are our favourite breastfeeding-friendly brands.
Boob Design
As the name suggests, Boob Design started out with a nursing collection, only later adding in maternity clothing. The sustainable brand offers lots of options for nursing mamas – from active wear, to dresses and nursing tops. We love the brand’s clean and minimal aesthetic and stylishly muted colour palette. Seraphine
For nursing-friendly wardrobe staples, head to Seraphine. Having dressed Royals and celebrities alike, the brand knows a thing or two about breastfeeding friendly clothing. They have a great range of breastfeeding clothing – from maxi dresses, to nursing bras, and even coats.
Bump & Milk
Mama-of-two Alex started Bump & Milk after feeling ‘overlooked’. The opposite of the frumpy, breastfeeding cliché, the brand’s pretty nursing dresses, jumpsuits, and comfy loungewear are both practical and stylish. Every detail has been thoughtfully designed – lift a ruffle and you’ll find a cleverly concealed zip, or look closer for an opening along a seam.
Beyond Nine
Founded by mama-of-three Naomi Raybould, Beyond Nine is best known for their super cool jumpsuits that can be worn throughout pregnancy and long after. Our breastfeeding-friendly favourites from the sustainable brand include the Poppy Jumpsuit (which has poppers down the front), the Milly and the Laura Jumpsuits (both allow for easy access), and the Coverall (which also easily opens at the front).
Isabella Oliver
London-based maternity brand Isabella Oliver focuses on ethical and sustainable style. Extending the lifecycle of their bump-friendly designs, many of their pieces are also made to be worn postpartum. Look out for breastfeeding friendly buttoned dresses, wrap over tops, and dungarees.
You & Milk
The brainchild of mama-of-two Aurélie Depeyre, you & milk creates breastfeeding friendly clothes that are both stylish and practical. The kind of pieces we’d want to wear whether we were breastfeeding or not, even their t-shirts have cleverly concealed zips to help make nursing in public as stress-free as possible.
MORI
For breastfeeding friendly loungewear, we love MORI. The sleepwear brand’s Maternity and Nursing Pyjamas can be worn throughout pregnancy and with buttons down the front are perfect for nursing too. Pack a pair in your hospital bag.
Juno Jacks
Mama-of-two Lucy Brown founded Juno Jacks with the mission to help normalise breastfeeding. The brand’s designs put a huge focus on comfort. Whether you’re shopping for a long sleeve top or a dress for a special occasion, you can be sure that it will be both stylish and practical.
Bravado
Bravado has a great selection of sustainable, supportive, and (mostly importantly!) stylish nursing bras. The brand also offers bras specifically designed for pumping, as well as nursing camisoles.
Jorgen House
Jorgen House’s collection of maternity movement wear is designed to be worn through all stages of womanhood. In a super-stylish colour palette, bodysuits and sports bras have unique magnetic clasps for nursing mamas, but we’ll bet you’ll want to wear them long afterwards too.
D for Doula
And finally, sustainably created by expert Doula and Midwife, Dionne Goldson, the DforD Gown is a new game changing maternity gown. Allowing for easy skin-to-skin access as well as being designed for breastfeeding, it offers new mums and mums-to-be maximum comfort and movement.
