What to keep in your first aid kit for your young family

Adobestock

When you have young children, it’s inevitable that scrapes, bumps, and minor accidents will  happen. Being prepared with a well-stocked first aid kit helps take the stress out of these  situations for both you and your little one. Our top tips are to regularly check all items are in date and seek extra medical attention for any serious illnesses or injuries. “Working with  Savlon, a family first aid favourite trusted for 70 years, here’s our guide to what every family  should keep in their first aid kit.”

Plasters & Dressings

Keep a stock of plasters and dressings of varying sizes for minor cuts and scrapes. Hypoallergenic plasters are designed for sensitive skin, and anything featuring your little  one’s favourite cartoon character is sure to make an ‘ouchie’ feel better. For larger wounds,  sterile gauze pads will help to absorb blood and protect the wound until you are able to seek  further medical attention.

Antiseptic Cream

Savlon Antiseptic Cream has been trusted for generations and is our go-to when mishaps  happen. Suitable for use on children, Savlon Antiseptic Cream cleanses and helps prevent  infection of cuts and grazes but can also be used for nappy rash, blisters & sunburn.

Wound Wipes

Savlon’s new Wound Cleansing Wipes are no-sting and gentle on skin, sterile and alcohol  free. Unlike many antiseptic and antibacterial first aid wipes that contain alcohol and may  sting, Savlon Wound Cleansing Wipes are gentle and can be used directly on minor wounds, cuts and grazes with no sting. Their usage is even in line with NHS guidance. Available in 10  individually wrapped sachets, you can also add a sachet to your bag when travelling.

Tweezers & Scissors

A pair of tweezers with a slanted tip can be useful to help remove splinters. Although, it’s  always recommended to seek further medical attention for glass or any deeply lodged  objects.

Scissors are handy for cutting bandages, tape, or even clothes in the case of an injury. Look  for a pair that’s child-safe but capable of cutting fabric and tape.

Burn Cream

Savlon Burns & Scalds 0.25% w/w Cream provides effective relief from minor burns and  scalds. It is specifically formulated to help treat infected cracked skin and can also be used  for sunburn blisters.

Make sure you seek professional medical advice for anything more than a mild burn.

Pain Relief

Make sure you have the children’s versions of paracetamol and ibuprofen in your kit for  managing pain, fever, and inflammation. Ensure you follow the correct dosage for your  child’s age and weight.

Adhesive Tape

Adhesive tape is handy for securing gauze or dressings that don’t have an adhesive  backing. For convenience, choose one with a dispenser and that is easy to tear.

Digital Thermometer

Little ones are notorious for being extra wriggly when you’re trying to take their temperature,  so we recommend investing in a good digital thermometer so you can take a reading quickly  and easily. Ear or forehead thermometers are less invasive, but a standard digital  thermometer for underarm use is also a good option.

Cold Pack

Cold packs can be used for soothing pain and reducing swelling after a knock or fall. Keep a  reusable one in your first aid kit to treat any bumps and bruises.

Bandages & Slings

It’s always best to get sprains, strains, and potential breaks or fractures checked by a medical professional, but having a few elastic bandages as well as a triangle bandage on-hand can be useful. Make sure you know how to use these correctly in case you need them.

Healing Gel

We also like to keep Savlon Scar Prevention Gel in our first aid kit as it speeds up healing  and reduces the likelihood of scarring on our little ones.

Disposable Gloves

Using disposable gloves can help keep open wounds sanitary. Opting for latex-free gloves to avoid any potential allergic reactions is best.

Basic First Aid Manual

Keeping a basic first aid guide in your kit can serve as a quick reminder in emergencies. Injuries can be stressful, so we’d recommend this even if you’ve attended a first aid course.

Emergency Contact List

Lastly, don’t forget to keep a list of emergency contacts inside your first aid kit. This should include your GP’s number, local hospitals, and emergency services, as well as any specific health information for your family, such as allergies or chronic conditions.
