LEGO House Review: Is It Worth the Trip to Denmark?

Tips & Reviews

Visiting LEGOLAND Billund with a five year old…

If you’re wondering whether LEGOLAND Billund is worth visiting, the answer is a resounding yes, especially for families with children aged around three to 10. As the original LEGOLAND resort and the birthplace of LEGO itself, this Danish destination combines a beautifully designed theme park with family-friendly hotels, interactive attractions like LEGO House, and easy access from London in just over an hour. Whether you’re planning your child’s first theme park holiday or looking for a European city break with a difference, LEGOLAND Billund offers the perfect mix of adventure, creativity, and Scandinavian charm.

From nostalgic parents to first-time little adventurers, Carly Glendinning finds out why the original LEGOHOUSE in Denmark remains one of Europe’s best family adventures

“We were ahead of our time”, my mum says when I tell her I’m taking my five year old daughter to LEGOLAND in Billund. My parents took me to Denmark when I was around the same age to visit the original park. LEGOLAND now has resorts across the world, but Billund was the very first one, built next to the LEGO factory in the sixties where the famous plastic bricks were made. I remember it so well from when I was little, so I’m excited to return with my own daughter.

We fly to Billund with BA one weekend in rainy June from Heathrow. The plane journey is a speedy 1 hour 20 minutes, and we pass the flight with fairy sticker books. Before we know it we’ve touched down in Billund Airport, and the resort is just a short cab ride away. It really couldn’t be easier to get there from London, especially when you’re travelling with little ones.

The Hotel

We’re staying at Hotel LEGOLAND, which has its own entrance directly into the park (a dream when you’re travelling with little ones!). The foyer immediately sets the tone, with a LEGO treehouse to climb in, sculptures dotted throughout, and little brick-building stations around every corner.

We’re in a Pirate Island room, much to my daughter’s excitement. Hotel LEGOLAND is very much designed with its youngest guests in mind, and it shows in all the thoughtful details that make everything feel easy from the moment you arrive.

The rooms themselves are simple but well-equipped, with everything you need for a family stay (from an iron to tea and coffee making facilities) and have that clean, Scandi feel. Ours comes with a double bed, a bunk tucked alongside it, and a glowing treasure map above, which quickly becomes a favourite bedtime feature.

And of course, there’s a big box of LEGO waiting in the room, which keeps my daughter happily occupied while we unpack and settle in.

The Food

Hotel LEGOLAND has a light, bright restaurant with a dedicated play area for little ones, which makes mealtimes feel relaxed. It’s worth booking dinner in advance, as it does get busy in the evenings.

Breakfast is a generous buffet each morning, with everything from pancakes and eggs to fruit, yoghurt and cereals. I’m also pleasantly surprised to find a clearly labelled allergy station, including a fridge stocked with non-dairy milks.

We end up eating dinner here three nights in a row. The food is excellent, with a different vegan option for me each evening, while my husband is equally happy with steak and Caesar salad.

LEGOLAND Park

Billund is the original home of LEGO and, unlike some of the newer resorts, it feels spacious, beautifully maintained and easy to navigate with young children. The park itself is surprisingly green, with wide paths and shady picnic spots.

At 110cm tall, my five-year-old discovers she is just big enough to ride her first rollercoasters! From the splashy Pirate Lagoon to the popular Flying Eagle, we’re surprised to find we have a little daredevil as she repeatedly shouts “This is the best day ever!”. The joy of LEGOLAND Billund is that it grows with your child; while there are gentle rides and DUPLO-themed attractions for younger visitors, there are plenty of bigger rides for more confident kids as they get older.

One of the park’s biggest highlights remains Miniland, which I remember vividly from my own childhood. Seeing famous landmarks recreated from millions of bricks is just as magical as I remember, and my daughter loves looking at the moving trains, boats and tiny details hidden throughout the displays.

LEGOLAND Billund never loses sight of its younger guests. There are numerous playgrounds, indoor spaces for rainy moments, and plenty of opportunities simply to stop and build with bricks together. By the end of the day my daughter is exhausted in the best possible way.

LEGO House

Just a five-minute drive from the resort lies LEGO House, often described as the ultimate LEGO experience. Housed in a stack of giant white bricks, this interactive attraction is less a museum and more a hub of creativity.

Spread across four colour-coded experience zones, children are encouraged to build, experiment and let their imaginations run wild. There are racing cars to test, animated fish to create and digital worlds to bring to life. Unlike the theme park, where the excitement comes from rides and attractions, LEGO House is slower-paced and really interactive.

One of the highlights for us is the LEGO Masters Academy, where budding builders can pick up expert tips and tackle creative challenges inspired by the hit television series. We take part in a Level Two session, which is a little beyond my five-year old, but she enjoys building a LEGO figure with me all the same.

Another standout experience is Mini Chef, an imaginative restaurant where meals are delivered to your table by LEGO robots. After placing your order using LEGO bricks, dishes travel along tracks overhead before arriving with much excitement from younger diners. It’s a clever blend of play and technology.

The Verdict

There are bigger theme parks and resorts, but there’s something special about visiting the place where the LEGO story began.

Easy to reach from London, brilliantly set up for families and packed with nostalgia for parents and magic for children, LEGOLAND Billund proves that some childhood memories really do live up to the hype. And I think that’s what I’ll remember most, not just the park itself, but watching my daughter experience it all for the very first time, in the same place I did over three decades ago.
