There’s nothing not to love about spring’s brighter mornings, longer afternoons, and the first signs of sunshine… unless you have a baby or toddler. The season’s natural shifts can sometimes throw even the most settled sleep routine off balance. If you’ve noticed a few early wake-ups, late bedtimes, or nap resistance creeping in, you’re not alone. Here are some gentle, practical springtime sleep tips to help your little one (and you!) get the rest you need.
Lighter evenings, warmer temperatures and the clocks going forward can all impact your little one’s rest. Here’s how to help them sleep soundly this spring…
1. Make friends with blackout blinds
With sunrise edging earlier and evenings staying lighter, it’s worth investing in blackout blinds or portable blackout shades. Darkness tells your little one’s body it’s time for sleep – without it, their natural melatonin production can be delayed, especially at bedtime.
2. Stick to your routine (but stay flexible)
We love spring’s spontaneous days – impromptu park trips, garden playdates, or longer outings. That said, try to keep your bedtime routine predictable: bath, story, milk, cuddles. Even if timing shifts by 15–30 minutes now and then, sticking to a familiar pattern helps babies and toddlers wind down and feel secure.
3. Dress for the weather
Warmer nights can mean your little one overheats – a common reason for disrupted sleep. Opt for breathable layers, like a short-sleeved vest with a lighter tog sleeping bag. Check the room temperature and adjust accordingly – ideally keeping the nursery between 16–20°C.
4. Prioritise outdoor time
Natural daylight is your secret weapon. Time spent outdoors helps regulate your child’s internal body clock (circadian rhythm), making it easier for them to feel sleepy when the sun sets. A morning walk or garden play before lunch can also help promote better naps.
5. Watch for overstimulation
Lighter evenings can mean it’s easy to pack too much into one day. But babies and toddlers are sensitive to overstimulation, especially in the run-up to bedtime. Keep the last hour of the day calm, quiet and screen-free if possible – even if it means skipping that last episode of Bluey.
6. Be kind to yourself
Seasonal changes are just that – a phase. If sleep is a little off right now, it doesn’t mean your routines are broken or your baby is ‘bad’ at sleeping. Be gentle with yourself, and trust that with a few small tweaks, things will settle again. While sleep might have its ups and downs, a consistent routine, the right sleep environment, and plenty of cuddles can go a long way.
