A Spring Fashion Guide for Stylish Mums on the go

As the sun continues to shine and the forecasts show we’re in for more blue skies and warm weather, I’ve realised that I spent most of my pregnancy and early postpartum period bundled up in Winter gear. With a new body that I’m still getting used to and the added demands of my wardrobe—namely breastfeeding-friendly pieces that could also take the occasional spit-up—it dawned on me that I had become a bit lost when it came to warm-weather style.

So off I went on a quest to find items that fit my brief—comfortable, breezy fabrics that I could easily move around in while still feeling put together. I needed clothes that I could throw on and pair with almost anything, because really, my tired mum brain was already working in overdrive.

Here you’ll find the pieces that made the cut—from airy pyjamas splashed with cheerful patterns to a smart linen shirt for an instantly polished look, these seven stylish picks for mums on the go will easily slot into your wardrobe this season.

New Mama Ina Yulo Stuve rounds up her favourite stylish clothing pieces for mums this spring…

Larson sweatshirt by ba&sh

The founders of cult Parisian label ba&sh quit their corporate jobs to become entrepreneurs once they each had their second child, so it’s not surprising that their clothes are especially created for women who want to look effortless in outfits that can go from day to night.

Alta charm necklace by Monica Vinader

I often forget how easy it is for a piece of jewellery to bring an entire look together. This stunning chain-link necklace from It Girl favourite Monica Vinader is my go-to statement piece when it comes to adding some oomph to any outfit. It’s a charm necklace, so you can add pendants as well, but I prefer stacking it with some of my other pieces or wearing it on its own with a cashmere sweater or button-down silk shirt. The ethos behind the brand is to design jewellery that ‘empowers and endures’ and the Alta necklace perfectly captures that classic, chic style.

Seersucker cotton leopard print pyjama set by Chelsea Peers

One of my guilty pleasures is spending the whole day in my pyjamas. Now that my little one is, thankfully, past the stage of spitting up on me every five minutes, I’ve realised my long, fluffy “I don’t care how dirty these get” number is ready to retire for the season. This set in a fun leopard and stripe print by Chelsea Peers has been the perfect transition sleepwear as we head into the warmer months—the button-up front gives easy access for nursing while the lightweight, breathable seersucker cotton material is really easy to clean in case any projectile episodes do happen.

The Overshirt by The Female Archetypes

Game-changing new fashion company The Female Archetypes shares a compelling statistic around their commitment to being the future of fashion fluidity: The average woman changes dress size 31 times in her adult life—this was an excellent reminder for me as I was going through my wardrobe after giving birth, trying to figure out if I’ll fit into some of my much-loved pieces again one day or if they’re destined for a trip to the charity shop. Similar to the rest of the items in their adjustable capsule wardrobe collection—which includes a trench coat, wide-leg jeans, shirt dress, and a blazer—the oversized classic white shirt I have comes with three side-seam panels that can be slotted in for when I’m breastfeeding or just feeling bloated and is versatile enough to be worn on its own or as a light jacket.

The Boyfriend shirt in linen by With Nothing Underneath

With Nothing Underneath has carved itself firmly into the wardrobes of the fashion set with its timeless pieces inspired by traditional men’s tailoring. They also recently achieved B-corp status for their strong commitment to sustainability and ethical shopping practices. After following the brand for a while, I finally traipsed over to their Belgravia store and got myself one of their linen Boyfriend shirts in storm blue, which offers a relaxed fit and is amazing paired with jeans or linen trousers. It’s easily become the shirt I gravitate to when I want to look pulled together and I already have my eye on their striped, fine poplin shirt for my next purchase.

Versatile wide-leg pant by Kaddadia

Kaddadia is on a mission to empower people to find their personal style by producing everyday clothes that evolve with our naturally fluctuating bodies. Its founder has created a body acceptance community called Hi Smithy! which encourages everyone to take up space and transform the relationships we have with our bodies. These versatile trousers come in a trendy high-waisted wide-leg cut, a conscious construction that elongates the body and creates a flattering silhouette. With the addition of the garter at the back, it became one of the few pairs of trousers I was able to wear during my pregnancy, when most of my bottoms made their way to the back of my closet.

Easy-sandwashed silk wide-leg trousers by Rise & Fall

Machine-washable silk? Sign me up! My third trimester weight gain coupled with historically weak ankles made for a number of painful falls during my pregnancy—aside from a scarred knee and my pride, one of the victims of the aforementioned falls was my beloved pair of satin trousers that I’ve had for over a decade. Rise & Fall is a brand I’m familiar with because I’ve been sleeping on their sheets for years, so I was pleased to find that they had expanded into clothing. These gorgeous trousers in an on-trend dried sage are so easy to dress up or down, have an elasticated waistband for absolute comfort, and are made by the same manufacturers as Zimmermann, Reformation, and Staud.
